Steve Carell, a correspondent on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” is ready for his bigscreen closeup: Universal has acquired a pitch by Carell and Judd Apatow, and Carell will star in the film.
Concept is being closely guarded for now (Apatow describes it as a “middle-aged coming-of-age story”), but the two will co-write the script.
Apatow, executive producer of “Freaks and Geeks,” will produce and helm the pic. Carell will also exec produce.
While best known for his small-screen comedy work, Carell made an appearance as a babbling news anchor in U’s “Bruce Almighty.” He also has small roles as a weatherman in DreamWorks’ “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” which Apatow produced, and as a security guard in MGM’s “Sleepover.”
Universal execs Mary Parent and Holly Bario are overseeing the project; they also oversaw last summer’s “Bruce Almighty.”
Also upcoming from Apatow is Sony’s “Fun With Dick and Jane” remake, which he scripted.
