Canucks fete emerging talent

Pic list includes 'Childstar,' 'Tong,' 'Claudia'

TORONTO — The Toronto Film Festival Group has selected a low-key list of the top 10 Canuck films for 2004.

An independent panel of 10 industryites bypassed better-known pics such as Istvan Szabo’s “Being Julia,” the opening-night film at the Toronto Film Festival, and Oliver Assayas’ “Clean” in favor of what group director Piers Handling described as a list favoring “emerging filmmakers.”

The list includes “Childstar,” from Don McKellar (“Last Night”); “Elles etaient cinq,” from Ghyslaine Cote; Chris Abraham’s “I, Claudia”; Mike Dowse’s “It’s All Gone Pete Tong”; Michael McGowan’s “Saint Ralph”; and “La Peau blanche,” from Daniel Roby.

Also on the list is Chris Landreth’s short film “Ryan,” which won three awards at Cannes, and three documentaries: “ScaredSacred” from Velcrow Ripper; Peter Raymont’s “Shake Hands With the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire”; and Francois Prevost and Hugo Latulippe’s “What Remains of Us.”

“The spectrum and scope of films on the list shows a new energy and continued vibrance within the Canadian film industry,” Handling said. “Our established filmmakers on the list display an impressive range and cinematic vision in their work.”

The films will screen Jan. 28-Feb. 5 in Toronto, with the filmmakers doing panel discussions, intros and Q&As. Pics later head to Vancouver and Ottawa for a limited time.
