Canton, Goldmann to produce spy pic
Atmosphere Entertainment’s Mark Canton has preemptively purchased rights to “Overworld: The Life and Times of a Reluctant Spy,” a memoir by Larry J. Kolb to be published in October by Riverhead Books. Deal is worth high six figures.
As the son of a career U.S. intelligence officer, Kolb traveled the globe with his father and learned to think, look and listen like a spy. Despite that, Kolb declined when first recruited by the CIA. He chose international business instead, but found his way into the spy game unwittingly.
“Overworld” has the “elements of a thriller, grounded by the fact it’s based on the real-world life of a master spy,” Canton said.
He will produce with Bernie Goldmann; Steve Barnett will exec produce. Intellectual Property Group brokered the deal. Atmosphere was founded late last year by Canton and Mark J. Kimsey of Daedalus Media Partners. Venture, which began with many of the film properties that Canton developed at past stops, expects to produce three to five pics per year starting in 2005.
