The Intl. Documentary Assn. has tapped 17 docus for the eighth annual InFact Theatrical Documentary Showcase, to be held Aug. 20-26 at the ArcLight in Hollywood.
Trade group noted that the event is designed to help filmmakers qualify for Oscar consideration and encourage exhibitors to dedicate more screens to nonfiction films.
The AMPAS rules requires that in order to qualify, documentaries must be exhibited on theatrical screens for paid admissions in either Los Angeles County or Manhattan for at least seven consecutive days as well as in four other cities.
Since the showcase was founded, 13 films featured at the event have been nominated for Oscars, and “The Last Days,” “The Personals” and “Chernobyl Heart” have won.
Films selected include “Z Channel — A Magnificent Obsession,” “Home of the Brave,” “Born Into Brothels,” “Collateral Damages,” “The Conscientious Objector,” “The Future of Food,” “In the Realms of the Unreal,” “Let the Church Say Amen,” “Repatriation,” “The Ritchie Boys” and “This Ain’t No Heartland.”
Short films (40 minutes or less) include “Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story,” “Hardwood,” “Hotel City,” “White Cane and Wheels” and “With No Direction Home.”
