‘Look’ U.S. bound with Sony Classics

Berry starrer latest acquisitoin for busy shingle

Marking the distrib’s second acquisition of a title out of the Cannes selection, Sony Pictures Classics has picked up rights for U.S. and most Latin American territories to Gallic helmer Agnes Jaoui’s competition entry “Look at Me,” one of a batch of 20 sales on the pic secured by StudioCanal.

Other distribbers that have acquired the title include Pathe U.K., Prokine in Germany, Alternative in Belgium, Gaga in Japan, Vertigo in Spain, Lucky Red in Italy, West in Russia, and Providence in Brazil.

Produced by Jean-Philippe Andraca and Christian Bernard of Jaoui’s Les Films A4, “Look at Me” stars Marilou Berry, Jaoui and writing partner Jean-Pierre Bacri in a comedy about an egotistical writer and his approval-seeking, zaftig daughter.

The SPC pickup follows the distrib’s acquisition earlier this week of Zhang Yimou’s period action-romance “The House of Flying Daggers,” which screened out of competition. Distrib also is close to making a deal on market title “Imaginary Heroes,” starring Sigourney Weaver, Emile Hirsch and Jeff Daniels.

The string of acquisitions makes the Sony division by far the most active buying force of the U.S. specialty players in Cannes.

“With this film, Agnes Jaoui becomes a major international film director,” said SPC co-president Michael Barker, underlining that the deal continues a longstanding relationship between the distrib and StudioCanal. SPC last acquired upcoming release “Riding Giants” from the French company at Sundance.

StudioCanal also has done brisk business on other pics from its 20-title Cannes slate. The Gallic hit comedy “Marriages,” by Valerie Guignabodet, has sold to distributors in eight territories, including Telepool in Germany.

Cedric Klapisch’s upcoming “Russian Dolls,” which reunites the characters of his hit comedy “L’Auberge Espagnole” five years after their sejour in Barcelona, has sold to distributors in the Middle East and Canada. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has taken all U.S. rights to “Crimson Rivers 2: Angels of the Apocalypse.”

A new title on the Canal Plus Group subsid’s lineup is Patrice Chereau’s working title “Gabrielle,” starring Isabelle Huppert and Pascal Greggory. Pic is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s short story “The Return,” which follows what happens when a bourgeois wife leaves a letter for her husband saying she has left him but then changes her mind.

The script is being written by Anne-Louise Tridivic and Chereau and the pic will be produced by Chereau’s Azor Film.
