Added success makes Memorial expectations run high
HOLLYWOOD — “Shrek 2” wound up being a bigger glutton at the weekend box office than first reported.
Pic’s final totals came in at $108 million for three-day and $128.9 million for the five-day, repping a 4% and 3% uptick respectively over the studio’s estimates.
“Shrek 2’s” final Sunday figure was $34.9 million vs. its Friday take of $28.3 million. Sunday typically generates the lowest B.O. of the weekend, with Saturday repping the peak. However, with animated movies a Sunday besting a Friday isn’t uncommon since families crowd into matinee shows.
Expectations are high for the sequel’s run during Memorial Day weekend despite the presence of Fox’s first summer entry, “The Day After Tomorrow.” “Shrek’s” sophomore frame played against Memorial Day bow “Pearl Harbor” in 2001. Though the green monster placed second for the frame, pic generated $55 million over four days, a 30% uptick over its three-day bow.
