HOLLYWOOD — Jamie Foxx‘s buzzometer reached an apotheosis last week, when the thesp picked up breakthrough award from the Hollywood Film Festival and presided over “Ray’s” Cinerama Dome preem the following evening.
The events capped months of buzz — and appearances — building anticipation for the thesp’s showy turn as the late Ray Charles. Early buzz over the movie cast a shadow over Foxx’s equally eye-opening, but more low-key, perf in “Collateral” this summer.
The “Ray” train began in earnest in Toronto, where Foxx hit the film fest party circuit, and continued through a Morehouse College tribute to Charles and this month’s taped tribute the late musician.
After all the buildup, Foxx wasn’t about to let a rainstorm dampen his spirits at the actual preem Oct. 19. The thesp was the picture of assurance at the Palladium after-party, commanding revelers to give their props to Hackford and the rest of the cast.
Hackford, however, revealed that Foxx, being a superstitious sort, hadn’t even seen the movie until that evening. (He filmed it with his eyes shut.) Actually seeing it, the helmer confided, was a big relief for the thesp.
And just think: the awards season has just begun.
