Producer talks of personal experiences
HOLLYWOOD — John Calley‘s long history with helmer Mike Nichols percolated through the Q&A following Variety‘s screening of “Closer.”
The studio chief-turned-producer — who got to know Nichols while living with Elaine May when she and Nichols were comedy partners — effortlessly tossed off self-deprecating one-liners to the ArcLight aud.
At the outset, Calley confessed that making films is so personal, “you kind of forget what the film is all about.” After a beat, he added: “Which could be Alzheimer’s, it just occurred to me.”
He admitted uncertainty about how the pic, which addresses very adult issues of fidelity and betrayal, would be received in the current cultural climate.
“I think what Mike and I are doing is drifting toward porn,” he cracked. “We’re just dipping our toe in.”
