Preemgoers had beastly fun at Sunday’s Cinerama Dome bow of Paramount/DreamWorks’ “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.”
A menagerie of snakes, some of which appeared in the pic, slithered through the tented afterparty, which also featured fortune tellers and spooky sets. Par’s Rob Friedman said he was glad “Unfortunate Events” is one of the few big family pics opening this month, noting that adults tend to think the pic is scarier than kids do. Exec producer Julia Pistor explained that Nickelodeon picked up rights to the books, which she lauded for being smart and irreverent, before the series became a huge pre-teen sensation.
Scribe Daniel Handler, who uses the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, confessed that when Nick optioned the books, he thought they must be “completely insane.”
Execs on hand included Sumner Redstone, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Donald De Line. Also making the serpent scene at the Children’s Hospital Benefit were pic’s Liam Aiken, Emily Browning, Billy Connolly and Cedric the Entertainer, plus Leelee Sobieski, Martin Short and Emma Roberts.
