Phobos will embrace ‘Darkness’

Shingle planning pic, vidgame based on Le Guin tome

Sandra Schulberg’s Phobos Entertainment has picked up all media rights to Ursula K. Le Guin’s sci-fi novel “The Left Hand of Darkness.”

First published in 1969, “The Left Hand of Darkness” is set on Winter, a lost planet whose inhabitants defy standard gender roles and even physically change genders. Story follows a human emissary who must bridge a cultural gulf to fulfill his mission to bring the planet back into the galactic fold.

Schulberg plans to exploit the property as both a feature and a vidgame.

Hallmark’s adaptation of Le Guin’s “Earthsea” airs on the Sci Fi Channel tonight and Tuesday.

Schulberg’s credits include exec producing Philip Kaufman’s “Quills” and Walter Hill’s “Undisputed.”

Schulberg founded Phobos Entertainment and Phobos Books in 2001. The first movie developed at the company, “Graveland,” was produced for Sci Fi and will air next year.

Outfit also published “Nobody Gets the Girl” and “Counterfeit Kings” as well as four short-story anthologies.
