'Oni' pic to be released in 2006, followed by vidgame
HOLLYWOOD — The son of legendary Japanese helmer Akira Kurosawa will make his feature directorial debut from an unfinished script by his late father.
Hisao Kurosawa will complete the script, whose working title is “Oni.”
Pic, about a blond-haired samurai’s struggle to discover his destiny in 16th- century Japan, will be released in 2006 and adapted into a videogame for the PlayStation 2 platform.
Project is a joint venture by Kurosawa’s Kurosawa Prods. along with gaming companies Koei and Kou Shibusawa. It is the latter’s first foray into film production. All three are based in Yokohama.
Project has a budget of ¥3 billion ($28 million).
Koei has all videogame development and other second-party licensing rights.
