Dimension taken with vidgame pic ‘Tekken’

Stone looks to helm $40 mil CGI actioner

Dimension Films has acquired North American distrib rights to vidgame feature “Tekken,” from Crystal Sky.

Financed by Crystal Sky and Japan’s Gaga, pic is based on the bestselling videogame licensed from manufacturer Namco.

Penned by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary (“The Mask,” “Tomb Raider”), pic is a CGI actioner budgeted at about $40 million.

Charles Stone (“Drumline”) is in negotiations to direct the film, which is being sold internationally by Crystal Sky at Cannes.

Deal is understood to include a significant P&A commitment for theatrical release; pic is expected to complete shooting in the third quarter of 2004.

With more than 20 million copies sold worldwide, “Tekken” is one of the bestselling vidgames of all time. Its storyline centers on a worldwide martial arts tournament that is nearing its finale, with a large purse to the fighter who can defeat Heihachi Mishima in the final round.

Deal follows Dimension’s pickup of domestic theatrical rights to Crystal Sky’s “Werewolf by Night,” an action-horror pic based on the Marvel comic.

“Tekken” has been picked up by Filmax in Spain, with Gaga handling distribution in Japan. Vidgame “Tekken 5” is in production and games rights-holder Namco is understood to be developing a new game based on the movie.

Crystal Sky also is developing a live-action adaptation of vidgame “Pac-Man” and the feature “Losing My Virginity,” about British entrepreneur Richard Branson.
