Valenti targets German piracy

MPA chair: 13.3 mil pix downloaded in country early in 2003

Motion Picture Assn. Chair Jack Valenti paid a visit to German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder during the Berlin fest to discuss piracy concerns.

Valenti reported to the Chancellor that “13.3 million films were downloaded in Germany in the first eight months of 2003, almost as many as during the entire 2002. Of this vast amount of thievery, 26% were pre-theatrical releases, and over 50% were before home video release.”

Earlier in the day Valenti spoke to filmmakers at the fest, calling upon them to enlist creatives and craftsmen in the fight against piracy. “The theft of creative works is an issue which unites the film communities of every nation in the world,” he said.
