SINGAPORE — StarHub Cable Vision (SCV) has taken court action against two vendors of unauthorized pay TV set-top decoder boxes.
One vendor has been fined $24,000, and the other is to be arrested for failing to appear in court.
StarHub senior veep of cable TV services Sandie Lee hopes this legal action will serve as a strong deterrent to others who intend to undertake similar acts of piracy. “We would like to advise the public not to purchase or use such unauthorized decoders, and to abide by the law and respect intellectual property rights,” she said.
Technological means have been employed to render unauthorized decoders ineffective in detecting the 40-plus channels. Users of illegal set-top boxes will receive only wavy or distorted images.
SCV has invested $350 million in cabling up the entire island with its state-of-the-art infrastructure and has also recently made additional investments to introduce digital cable services later this year.
