Watchdogs growl at media links to politics

World Brief

BUDAPEST — Moldova’s broadcast watchdogs have slapped a daily two-minute limit on adverts for political candidates and parties airing on government-controlled network TeleRadio Moldova, TeleRadio Gagauzia and Euro TV Chisinau.

The Broadcasting Coordinating Council warned that networks that break this rule could have their licenses terminated. The stiff measures come in the run-up to elections for 900 mayors and 10,000 aldermen, and in the wake of criticisms from the Council of Europe and journalistic bodies that political parties unduly influence Moldova’s broadcasters.
