‘Wanda’ living large without aid of ‘Idol’

New show retaining 94% of 'Mac' adults lead

HOLLYWOOD — Fox laffer “Wanda at Large” is looking more and more like a hit after winning its Wednesday slot for a third straight week — and, for the first time, without a lead-in from “American Idol.”

According to Nielsen, “Wanda” (5.9/15 in adults 18-49, 12.12 million viewers overall) held on to a very impressive 94% of its 18-49 lead-in from “Bernie Mac” (6.3/16 in A18-49, 12.93m), which itself returned from a two-week hiatus and delivered its best numbers to date.

The 5.9 for “Wanda” is higher, for example, than last week’s scores for first-year comedies “Still Standing” on CBS (5.6/13) or “Good Morning Miami” on NBC (5.6/14) — and both of these shows had stronger lead-ins (from “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “Will & Grace, respectively).

Upbeat about ‘Wanda’

This suggests that Fox really has something in “Wanda” and that its big numbers in its opening two weeks weren’t solely the result of its huge “American Idol” lead-in.

For its part, “Idol” dominated once again (9.4/25 in A18-49, 19.17m), and lead-in “That ’70s Show” (5.7/16 in A18-49) easily led at 8 o’clock.

Elsewhere, ABC’s “The Bachelor” (5.4/14 in A18-49, 11.18m), which aired from 9 to 10:06, improved a bit week-to-week but remains a couple of notches below the level of the recent “Bachelorette.”

CBS’ “Star Search” again looked lethargic, placing fourth from 8 to 9 in both adults 18-49 (2.5/7) and 25-54 (3.1/8).
