Viasat feevee bows in E. Europe

MTG self-produced station to mix docs, extreme sports

AMSTERDAM — Nordic media outfit Modern Times Group is launching pay TV channel Viasat Explorer in three Baltic states, Russia, Moldova, Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria on Nov. 1.

Viasat Explorer is one of 20 self-produced channels belonging to Viasat Broadcasting, the terrestrial and pay TV arm of MTG. It combines travel, exploration, wildlife and natural world documentaries with extreme sports coverage and true crime series.

Viasat launched movie channel TV1000 into the region earlier this year, adding 584,000 subscribers to a Scandinavian base of 441,000.

MTG already owns TV3, TV1000 and Tango in the Baltic states; Hungarian channel Viasat TV3; and a 30% stake in CTV and a 75% stake in Dariel TV, both in Russia.
