JOHANNESBURG — Continental paybox M-Net is launching a youth-skewed channel Aug. 1 as part of its DSTV satellite bouquet.
The Teen Channel will target educated, well-informed 15- to 20-year-olds. Helen Smit, a former commissioning editor at M-Net Local Prods. and also head of KTV, M-Net’s children’s channel, will head the new channel, which will offer foreign sitcoms, dramas, animation series and music shows.
Smit says research has shown today’s stressed-out teens want to relax in front of the box watching humor, particularly irreverent programs like “South Park.” Research also shows teens are keen on using interactive technology.
KTV, aimed at 7- to 16-year-olds, will be repositioned to target viewers ages 3-12, to complement the Teen Channel.
