Sun rises in China

World brief

Sun Media’s limited broadcasting rights in China are being restored after the State Administration of Radio, Film & Television suspended its Sun TV and Jet TV on April 1.

Sun Entertainment Television, a production joint venture, was meant to air April 1. Partners Jet TV and Taiwan broadcaster Eastern Broadcasting are supplying programs to Sun TV as part of its relaunch.

According to reports, the SARFT suspended Sun’s broadcast rights in hotels and designated residential compounds on the mainland because of its alliance with Eastern, which had previously — along with other Taiwan broadcasters — had its application for landing rights in China rejected. It is unclear what has been negotiated to allow the resumption of Sun’s broadcast rights.

Sun Media owns Sun TV and has a 60% stake in Jet TV.
