Channel 4 snaps up original animated series
LONDON –- In a deal that will bring the infamous web slinger back to British television screens, commercial web Channel 4 has picked up 52 episodes of the recently remastered 1967 “Classic Spider-Man” animated series.
The original series was first broadcast in Blighty on commercial network ITV back in the 70’s.
The 60’s series has been renovated by Fox Kids Europe and Buena Vista International Television from the original 35mm film negatives and includes the memorable title song and soundtrack. The series’ retro feel and Spidey’s one-liners have also been left intact.
“The ‘Classic Spider-Man’ has that rare ability to appeal to a wide audience — both those who have recently been introduced to the character and those who have been familiar with him for a long time,” said Jay Kandola, head of series acquisitions at C4.
Sony, which launched its latest animated “Spider-Man” series at MIP-TV, has also been in talks with the web about its series, but Kandola said, “we can not confirm our interest as yet.”
C4 has not yet announced a transmission date for the series.
