PRAGUE — Markiza TV, Slovakia’s leading commercial channel, has been fined $25,000 for biased reporting during last fall’s national elections.
The station supported its former general director and license holder Pavol Rusko and his newly formed ANO party. Rusko won a seat in the Slovak parliament and is said to have his sights on the prime ministership.
Markiza is 49% owned by U.S.-backed Central European Media Enterprises (CME).
“We’re embarrassed by this, plain and simple,” said CME chief exec Fred Klinkhammer.
