PBS tops Peabody honors

See winnersThis year’s Peabody Award recipients range from ESPN’s anglers to “Def Poetry Jam” on HBO.

Thirty-one winners were announced Wednesday from Athens, Ga. Honorees are tapped for excellence and are not categorized in any way.

Roster was filled with PBS programming — eight productions in all. Nods included the “Frontline” documentary “Shattered Dreams of Peace: The Road to Oslo,” and two citations for “Masterpiece Theatre.”

News programming recognized included CNN’s “Terror on Tape,” about Al Qaeda’s terrorist training; CBS News’ “9/11” documentary; and ABC’s “Nightline,” which drew nods for “The Survivors,” about the survivors of 9/11, and “Heart of Darkness,” about the 10-year conflict in Congo.

HBO took three Peabodys, for “Six Feet Under,” Winston Churchill biopic “The Gathering Storm” and series “Def Poetry Jam.” Showtime and TNT were recognized for telepics “Bang Bang You’re Dead” and “Door to Door,” respectively.

Barbara Walters will host kudosfest May 19 at the Waldorf Astoria in Gotham. Event will be broadcast in June on A&E — the first time the ceremony will reach a national audience.
