NBC, CBS skeins dominate Thursday

NBC has opened the November sweep with a Thursday victory in adults 18-49 led by “ER,” but CBS ran a strong second in the demo and pulled ahead in adults 25-54 courtesy of “CSI,” according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen. The Eye net also led easily in total viewers.

“ER” (9.8/26 in adults 18-49, 20.1 million viewers overall) was a decisive winner at 10 for CBS, more than doubling the 18-49 score of CBS competing drama “Without a Trace” (4.8/13, 15.8 million viewers overall). Super-sized episodes of “Friends” (projected 8.8/24 in adults 18-49, 19.5 million viewers overall), “Will & Grace” (projected 7.6/19 in adults 18-49, 16.5 million viewers overall) and “Scrubs” (projected 6.4/16 in adults 18-49, 11.8 million viewers overall) placed second to CBS for the 8-10 p.m. time period.

At CBS, “Survivor: Pearl Islands” (7.7/20 in adults 18-49, 20.7 million viewers overall) led its hour in 25-54 and total viewers, delivering some of its best numbers since its premiere perf. “CSI” (9.5/23 in adults 18-49, 27.3 million viewers overall) overwhelmed its competish at 9.

Fox’s premiere of “Tru Calling” at 8 was well behind the leaders (1.9/5 in adults 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall), but it did top the demo perf of ABC’s “Threat Matrix” (1.5/4 in adults 18-49, 6.9 million viewers overall). ABC fared better at 10 with “Primetime” (3.1/8 in adults 18-49, 9.4 million viewers overall) and at 9 with “Extreme Makeover” (2.9/7 in adults 18-49, 8.7 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages: NBC, 8.4/22; CBS, 7.3/19; ABC, 2.5/6; UPN, 2.4/6; Fox, 1.5/4; WB, 0.8/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 21.2 million viewers; NBC, 17.2 million; ABC, 8.4 million; UPN, 5.8 million; Fox, 3.8 million; WB, 2.4 million.
