N.Z. producer rides ‘Heroes’ into Oz

Gibson is 25% minority partner in $8 mil kids co-prod

AUCKLAND — A Kiwi producer is finally making inroads into Australia’s complex quota system that ensures local content is shown on Oz screens.

Wellington producer Dave Gibson of the Gibson Group is a 25% minority partner in 26-part, $8 million kids series “Holly’s Heroes,” a co-production with Anne Darrouzet of Oz outfit Cosi-Westside in Melbourne.

Series follows a preteen Kiwi girl who moves to Australia and starts her own basketball team when she is shut out by the locals.

It is backed in Oz by Kerry Packer’s Nine Network and funders Film Victoria and FFC. In New Zealand, coin is coming from pubcaster TV2 and public funder New Zealand on Air.

Project is mostly filmed in Australia, and industryites hope it will thaw chilly relations between producers in the respective territories.

Last year just six hours of Kiwi content aired in Oz despite a long legal battle that eventually gave Kiwi product preferential access.
