World Brief

SINGAPORE — Commercial broadcaster MediaCorp is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with its first 100-episode drama series, “Holland Village,” named after a bustling suburb of Singapore.

“Long-form drama of this kind has never been done in Singapore before,” says CEO Ernest Wong. “We are confident that it will excite viewers and keep them coming back for more.”

Wong says the series will draw on MediaCorp’s strength in producing popular local dramas, which continue to outrate imported fare.

MediaCorp is keeping quiet about what else lies in store, but it will revive a few popular favorites “updated and refreshed with new treatment and flavor.”

“For example, the remake of ‘Perfect Match’ has gone live and interactive, with even more audience participation,” says Wong. “Likewise, Jack Neo’s landmark ‘Comedy Night’ will also make a comeback with a new look.”

Wong says MediaCorp will continue to look beyond Singapore for markets for its content. “The real opportunity lies in producing content for the broadcasting industry in Singapore and overseas,” he says.
