Jeff Ford, Britain’s Channel Five

Buyer buzz

What slots on your station need to be filled and what genre and type of shows are you looking for to fill them?

“We are looking for one-hour U.S. dramas, preferably not crime related. Unfortunately, they are mostly crime-driven, so there is not much we can do to change that.

” ‘CSI: Miami’ will debut this winter. We also bought ‘Boomtown,’ and are trying to offer our audience something different than a straightforward storyline.

How has your programming budget changed or shrunk over the last couple of years?

“We’ve increased our investment in programming, but I’d rather not discuss how much we actual spend. We’ve certainly doubled our investment in current affairs.”

What has changed in your buying strategy over the past year or so?

“Five is shifting away from running a movie at 9 p.m. daily. The viewer perception of Five is starting to change and there is definitely a wider range of shows that we’re now offering and open to taking.”
