World Brief

The BBC World channel has been dropped by Israeli cable TV companies, but the two sides are offering different reasons why.

A spokesman for the Israeli cable operators said the channel was dropped because of poor ratings — the broadcaster’s coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been criticized locally.

The commercial arm of U.K. pubcaster the BBC said the parties could not agree to carriage terms, calling the cable operators’ offer “not commercially viable.”

Labor member of parliament Yitzhak Herzog is lobbying to have the channel reinstated and has written to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, currently acting minister of communications.
