Teuton topper puts his name to listings game
You’ve heard of O, the Oprah Winfrey mag? Now read Kofler.
Not without irony, Premiere paybox topper Georg Kofler has named the service’s new television mag TV Kofler to avoid legal challenges from publishers of established guides.
They complained that the biweekly’s original title, “TV Komplett,” was inaccurate as it didn’t offer a complete guide — leaving out minor regional weblets. TV Kofler, however, does offer more than existing guides as it includes all 67 digital and analog stations. Its rivals do not list Premiere’s digital offerings.
TV weekly rival Fernsehwoche added to the tension with a survey claiming that 61% of Germans would never subscribe to pay TV. Fernsehwoche is published by Hamburg-based Bauer, market leader in TV guides, which was first to file a preliminary injunction against Premiere’s print project.
The rival mags “are trying ridiculous arguments to defend their territory against a new competitor,” Kofler says. “That’s why our answer need to be satiric. The name TV Kofler will be immune against any move from shysters.”
New mag bows Oct. 10, but it will be sent only to subscribers of Kofler’s Premiere service until the newsstand spat is resolved.
