Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

Fox captured the second Wednesday of the May sweep in all key categories, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, as the results show edition of “American Idol” hit a three-month high and “Bernie Mac” its best ratings to date for a second straight week.

Fox led three of its four half-hours in adults 18-49, with “That ’70s Show” (5.8/18) winning easily at 8, “American Idol” (10.1/27 in adults 18-49, 22.2 million viewers overall) dominating at 8:30, and “Bernie Mac” topping its 9 o’clock slot (projected 6.7/17 in adults 18-49, 14.1 million viewers overall). At 9:30, a second original “Bernie” (5.5/13 in adults 18-49) placed second to ABC’s “The Bachelor.”

ABC had a strong night as well, with “My Wife and Kids” (3.6/11 in adults 18-49, 10 million viewers overall) and “George Lopez” (3.5/9 in adults 18-49, 9.0 million viewers overall) both placing second and “The Bachelor” winning the 9 o’clock hour in adults 18-49 (6.4/16, 13.2 million viewers overall). “Extreme Makeover” closed out the night in second (5.1/14 in adults 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall).

At NBC, “Law & Order” won in the 10 o’clock hour (5.8/16 in adults 18-49, 17.2 million viewers overall), and “The West Wing” remained third in 18-49 at 9 (4.3/11, 13.3 million viewers overall).

CBS was well off the pace in each of the night’s hours.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 7.1/19; ABC, 5.0/13; NBC, 4.2/11; CBS, 2.4/6.

In total viewers: Fox led with 15.1 million.
