Francophones echo fund gripe

World Brief

Quebec French-lingo broadcasters TVA, TQS and Astral Media on Wednesday added their voices to the growing chorus of webs and producers in the Great White North unhappy with reduced cash handouts from the Canadian Television Fund.

They said the lack of support for many of French Canada’s most popular shows will hurt the Quebec TV industry.

This comes after loud complaints earlier this week from producers and broadcasters in English Canada about the cuts.

The Quebec broadcasters want the fund to allocate at least C$8 million ($5.4 million) to finance the French-language programs that were refused funding.

TVA is the ratings leader in French Canada and many of the network’s top series were turned down, including five that rank among the top 10 most popular shows among French-lingo viewers.
