‘Cupid’ misses mark

Eye's contest show bows to modest ratings

HOLLYWOOD — It wasn’t quite love at first sight for auds and the new CBS relationship show “Cupid,” which bowed to modest ratings Wednesday.

According to Nielsen nationals, “Cupid” averaged a second-place 3.5/10 in adults 18-49 and 7.4 million viewers overall at 10 p.m., behind a repeat of NBC’s “Law & Order” (3.8/12 in 18-49, 12.43m). It did edge out “Law” in 18-34 (3.2/11 vs. 3.0/10).

Also in the hour, ABC’s short-run series “The Dating Experiment” fell to its lowest ratings in three tries and ran a distant third (1.5/4 in A18-49, 3.47m).

While the “Cupid” bow reps a 9% improvement for CBS vs. what “48 Hours” had averaged in the slot this summer (3.5 vs. 3.2 in 18-49), its start was underwhelming given its auspices (created by “American Idol’s” Simon Cowell, who was prominently featured in net promos) and lead-in (first-place 3.7/11 in 18-49 from “Big Brother 4”).

Lowest contest preem

“Cupid’s” 10 share in 18-49 is the lowest for a preem of the six unscripted contest shows to bow on the major nets this summer, trailing Fox’s “American Juniors” (15), NBC’s “Last Comic Standing” and “Fame” (13 apiece), the Peacock’s “For Love or Money” (12) and Fox’s “Paradise Hotel” (11).

CBS will rebroadcast the first episode of “Cupid,” hosted by MTV’s Brian McFayden, on Tuesday at 9, following “Big Brother.”

Fox’s “Paradise Hotel” (3.1/11 in A18-49, 6.30m) held up well opposite the first Wednesday seg of “Big Brother” with a special 90-minute episode from 8:30 to 10. Although “Big Bro” beat it head-to-head in 18-49 (3.7 to 3.4), “Paradise” won easily in 18-34 (4.4/15 vs. 3.1/11).

‘Fame’ distant third

In the night’s opening hour, NBC’s “Fame” (2.3/8 in A18-49, 6.54m) was again a distant third in 18-49, well behind ABC’s repeat comedies (3.3/11) and Fox’s combo of comedy and “Paradise Hotel” (3.1/11). ABC’s “George Lopez” (3.4/11) led at 8:30 opposite mostly firstrun competish.

And the WB’s “Boarding House: North Shore” (1.0/3 in A18-49, 1.96m) continues to struggle, even falling behind CBS’ “60 Minutes II” in persons 12-34 (1.0/4 vs. 1.3/5).
