JOHANNESBURG — The producers of the South African version of “Weakest Link” have cast an Anne Robinson look-alike to host the local version of the show.
With her short red hair, Fiona Coyle, chosen from nearly 500 applications, is a dead ringer for Robinson, who has developed a fearsome reputation as the acerbic, sharp-tongued quizmistress on the hit quiz show.
Producer Rapid Blue and pubster channel SABC 3, which will broadcast the show starting in September, believe they have found their Robinson in Coyle, a playwright who penned satires “Glass Roots” and “As the Koekie Crumbles.”
Coyle, who spent four years in Kenya working with elephant expert Daphne Sheldrick, believes she is more than up to the job. “If you can handle rhinos and wild elephants, South African contestants should be a walk in the park,” she says.
