HOLLYWOOD — It’s a home makeover show! It’s a gameshow! It’s a new genre that cable is about to flog to death!
Contestants on new series from USA and TBS give the two-day format of longrunning home decor series “Trading Spaces” the heave-ho, as they redesign and compete to win entire houses.
Cablers hope to tap into the ratings revenues seen at such nets as TLC, which launched into basic cable’s top 10 courtesy of “Spaces.”
USA premiered its entry “House Wars” on Sept. 29. “Wars,” from Denise Cramsey (“Trading Spaces”) and Ben Silverman (“Coupling”), pits four families against one another as each designs and decorates an empty house.
In the other corner, TBS will bow “House Rules,” which centers on three competing couples racing to renovate homes over 12 weeks.
In both skeins, audiences choose the winning domiciles.
Because one is never enough in the 200-channel universe, “House Wars” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on USA. “House Rules” bows Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. on TBS.
