Auds still worship ‘Idol’

Fox remained unbeaten on Tuesday since January by winning easily in all key demographic categories on April 22, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

“American Idol” (9.3/26 in adults 18-49, 20.1 million viewers overall) again defeated its combined ABC-CBS-NBC competish from 8 to 9, while drama “24” (5.7/14 in adults 18-49, 12 million viewers overall) led its hour in key demos. Both Fox programs were up week-to-week.

It was a close three-way battle for second place, with CBS edging out ABC and NBC on the strength of “Judging Amy” (3.9/10 in adults 18-49, 13.8 million viewers overall), which tied for the hour’s lead in 18-49 with NBC’s “Dateline” while winning outright in adults 25-54 and total viewers. From 8 to 9, net’s “JAG” (2.5/7 in adults 18-49, 13.5 million viewers overall) placed second to “Idol.”

ABC was paced by “According to Jim,” whose repeat at 9 (3.4/9 in adults 18-49) edged out an original seg of NBC’s fading “Frasier” (3.2/8). In its second week back, NBC’s “Watching Ellie” at 9:30 (2.8/7 in adults 18-49) trailed ABC’s “Lost at Home” (3.0/8 in adults 18-49).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 7.5/20; CBS, 3.0/8; ABC, 2.9/8; NBC, 2.9/8.

In total viewers, Fox led with 16 million viewers.
