Animators flock to Cartoon Masters

Confab focuses on creative issues

BERLIN — European animators gathered in the historical German city of Erfurt April 24 – 26 for the latest Cartoon Masters meeting to look at the creative side of the business.

One of three Cartoon Masters events to be held this year, Cartoon Creativity attracted some 100 international animators, directors, producers and scriptwriters for a series of practical workshops and presentations from fellow industry professionals.

Animation director and storyboard artist Tom Sito (“Osmosis Jones”), DreamWorks animator Pat Sito (“The Road to El Dorado”), scriptwriter Barbara Slade (“Angelina Ballerina”), Sebastian Debertin, head of animation at German tyke channel KI.KA and Claude de Saint Vincent, prexy of France’s animation and publishing group Dargaud, were among the 15 guest speakers at the confab. Topics ranged from the adaptation of existing works of literature to the importance of storyboard design and developing dialogue.

Upcoming Cartoon Masters include Cartoon Future, scheduled May 15 – 17 in A Coruna, Spain, which focuses on the latest innovations in CG animation, and Cartoon Finance, to be held in Cardiff, Wales, June 20 – 21, which examines financing possibilities for animation in Europe. The Cartoon Master series is sponsored by the European Union subsidy org Media Program.
