Scribes quip at the soiree

Variety celebrates its 10 Screenwriters to Watch

Scribes being feted at a Variety soiree Thursday night at Asia de Cuba momentarily struggled for something witty to say. Recovering quickly, Anya Kochoff (“Monster-in-Law”) said her script was not based on her own mother-in-law. “This movie is universal for women,” she said. “It’s a tribute to all the daughters-in-law who have to deal with mothers-in-law.”

The 10 Screenwriters to Watch party also drew honorees “X-Men 2” scribes Dan Harris and writing partner Mike Dougherty, Dean Georgaris, Sacha Gervasi and Massy Tadjedian, along with New Line’s Toby Emmerich, scribe Steve Zaillian and Variety publisher Charles Koones.
