A star was born Wednesday night after the Gotham unspooling of “Raising Victor Vargas” — and she wasn’t exactly your typical fresh-faced ingenue.
Post-screening at Alice Tully Hall, tyro thesp and Dominican abuelita Altagracia Guzman worked the crowd best.
The 75-year-old grandmother lapped up the applause and milked the aud for more. “What do you say about grandma?” she called out to thunderous clapping.
Pic, which opened the New Directors New Film series, was a family affair, literally and figuratively. Brothers Victor and Silvestre Rasuk re-created their real-life relationship for helmer Peter Sollett. Guzman was the casting director’s aunt.
No counter at Schwab’s drugstore for this newcomer, noted Sollett: “She’s at the bar having a shot now.”
In attendance: Samuel Goldwyn Jr., Fireworks’ Bob Aaronson, co-stars Judy Marte and Krystal Rodriguez and guests David Byrne, Alexander Payne and Marisa Tomei.
