Sen. John Edwards was the latest Democratic presidential aspirant to collect Hollywood campaign coin last week, courtesy of a bash Dennis and Victoria Hopper hosted at their bipartisan Venice home.
After a George W. Bush-bashing speech from Edwards, producer Chris Moore somewhat sheepishly asked Edwards to explain why he is any better than the other eight Democrats running for president. In his North Carolina drawl, Edwards said he has the best shot to win heartland support. “I come from these people,” he said. “I know I can connect with them.”
The Hoppers first met the politician while staying at their home in Wilmington, N.C. Victoria Hopper, who has also held a fundraiser for Sen. John Kerry, said she wanted to help the Dems beat George W. Bush. But what of Dennis? “This is going to confuse you,” he said, “but I’m actually a Republican. I think they’re both good men (Edwards and Kerry) but I’m here in support of my wife.”
Also on hand were thesps Gina Gershon and Jeanne Tripplehorn; producers Armyan Bernstein, Ron Yerxa, JC Spink, Chris Bender and Sam Kitt; agent Adam Venti and Greg Siegel; and legendary blurb helmer Joe Pytka.
(Co-host Ashton Kutcher didn’t attend, stuck in New York after the Southern California wildfires disrupted his travel plans.)
