It was an ’80s flashback of an alternative sort Thursday night at the premiere of music doc “Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns.”
Pic, which follows the career of whimsical Brooklyn-based duo They Might Be Giants, unspooled before a lively crowd of fans, who were hypercaffeinated thanks to the Mud Truck dispensing java outside the theater. (Part of the film focuses on band’s dependency on coffee.)
Veteran talkshow host Joe Franklin kicked off the concert/after-party at the Bowery Ballroom, where TMBG was joined onstage by Syd Straw and seminal front men Frank Black (the Pixies) and Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes).
ABC correspondent Robert Krulwich came bearing a proclamation from Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz declaring Thursday “They Might Be Giants Day” and thanking them for being “ambassadors of love.”
