Comics fete 20 years of laffs

War on guests' minds at Caroline's party

Thursday night in midtown Manhattan, comedy lovers took time out from wartime concerns for joke-filled bonhomie. Funnymen Denis Leary, Jon Stewart and David Alan Grier came out to Carnegie Hall (or as it was referred to several times during the evening, Carnegie “fucking” Hall) to fete Caroline Hirsch for the 20th anni of her boite, Caroline’s on Broadway. Celebration aside, war was definitely on everyone’s mind and obvious fodder for material.

“Used to be you judged a comic on how long it was before he said ‘fuck,’ ” noted emcee Lewis Black. “Now it’s how long before he mentions the war.”

Post-performance party was held at Caroline’s on Broadway. Jim Gaffigan, Meredith Vieira, Chris Meloni, Kim Cattrall and Rosie Perez were among the guests noshing on burgers and cupcakes.
