John Leguizamo spent his birthday unspooling his directorial debut in Gotham July 22.
Sounding like a real boxing promoter, he invited audience members to call him if they were unsatisfied with any of the fight sequences in “Undefeated.”
Leguizamo spent months training for HBO’s pugilist pic. “I was beat up by women who were champion boxers, I got beat up by everybody,” he said.
Celebration at the Copacabana was especially sweet for the multihyphenate because his pic opened the Latino Film Festival. “It’s a true Latin film because most of the cast is Latin,” he said.
City’s Dept. of Archives and Records surprised Leguizamo with the naturalization certificates of his parents.
“I didn’t know I was legal,” he joked.
Also in attendance were co-stars Vanessa Ferlito, Nestor Serrano, Adrian Martinez and Michael Olajide; HBO’s Keri Putnam; pic’s exec producers Kathy DeMarco, John Hart, Jeffrey Sharp and Robert Kessel; and guests Katherine Oliver, Willie Garson, Evan Handler, Jellybean Benitez, Peter Sollett, Sam Rockwell, Jennifer Esposito and Josh Hamilton.
