Legit, film and TV actor
Lyle S. Bettger, veteran legit, pic and TV thesp, died of natural causes Sept. 24 in Atascadero, Calif. He was 88.
Bettger began his Broadway career in 1940 in “The Flying Girados.” His other legit credits include “The Moon Is Down,” “Oh, Brother” and “John Loves Mary.”
In 1949, he pacted with Par and made his big screen debut in “No Man of Her Own.” In the following decade, he appeared in numerous films, including “Union Station,” “Carnival Story” and “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.” Throughout his enduring career, he co-starred and appeared in 26 pics.
Bettger began his TV career in 1955 and, in 1957, starred in the skein “Court of Last Resort,” followed by a co-starring role in the 1959 skein “Grand Jury.”
He appeared in several episodes of “Hawaii 5-0,” including the show’s 1979 series finale, after which he retired to Hawaii.
Bettger is survived by his wife, Sue; a sister; two sons; a daughter; and three grandchildren.
