Kathie Browne McGavin, actress who appeared in more than 100 TV episodes plus many and stage productions, died April 8 of natural causes in Beverly Hills. She was 63 and had previously survived breast cancer.
San Luis Obispo, Calif., native and wife of well-known thesp Darren McGavin since 1969 made her showbiz debut at 6 in a school play, moved to Hollywood as a teen, studied at L.A. City College and worked in small theaters. A TV director and some casting agents saw her in the lead of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” auditions followed, and she was soon playing roles on TV shows including “Gunsmoke,” “Have Gun, Will Travel” and “Bonanza,” “Rockford Files,” “Get Smart,” “Star Trek” and many more. Motion pictures also came along, including “Hondo,” “Berlin Affair,” “Brass Bottle,” “Cinderfella” and “Man’s Favorite Sport.”
She is survived by her husband.
A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Old North Church, Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
As a breast cancer survivor, she was a strong advocate for breast cancer research, and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
