Nordisk pumps up Swedish TV ops

Vet tapped to lead unit in pan-Scandi format plan

AMSTERDAM — Egmont subsidiary Nordisk Film has moved to beef up its Scandinavian TV holdings with the appointment of Daniel af Klintberg as the general manager of Nordisk Film TV Ltd., its Swedish TV production arm.

Af Klintberg, who started at SVT in 1996, comes to Nordisk Film from his position as deputy head of entertainment at Swedish Television (SVT), and will step up to his new position on Sept. 1. He was also a project manager for SVT’s longstanding successful format “Expedition Robinson,” among other projects. Prior to moving over to SVT, he was head of programming for Swedish youth station ZTV.

Nordisk Film president Kenneth Plummer told Daily Variety that the company has moved into leading positions in its TV operations in terms of turnover in Norway and Denmark, but has been lagging behind in Sweden.

In that country, it was a relatively new player, especially in the format biz, and it came up against some formidable competish from Modern Times Group’s major format cranker Strix, Jarowskij Sweden and even MTV Produktions, which just took over Swedish format cruncher Mastiff Media.

The hiring of the 37-year old af Klintberg, according to Plummer, puts the competition on notice that “we’ve decided to stay in Sweden in a significant way” in TV, especially the formats area. “We want all of the concepts that we develop to be exportable across Scandinavia, and we plan to go full steam ahead” to carry out that strategy, he added.

The office is currently being run by Helena Sandermark-Onsum, who is moving over to become general manager of Nordisk Film’s post-production activities in Sweden.

While Nordisk is in the early stages of developing its format business, its first outing “Sensing Murder” has demonstrated that its got the juice to compete internationally, as well. The format has sold to more than a half a dozen territories outside of Scandinavia and has been optioned to another 10.

Plummer said Nordisk will also push for its high-quality drama to have pan-Scandi legs. New series “Defense,” about the workings of a small law firm produced for TV2 Danmark, has now been picked up by TV2 Norway and SVT in Sweden.
