Disney wins in cable; edges out Nick

Original pics 'Sniper,' 'Girl' see huge numbers

The Disney Channel edged out Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite to finish first among all basic-cable networks last week, but the big story was the powerhouse numbers racked up by two original movies: USA Network’s “D.C. Sniper: 23 Days of Fear” and ABC Family’s “Beautiful Girl.”

“D.C. Sniper,” on Oct. 17, ended up the highest-rated movie of the week in basic cable, original or theatrical, harvesting 3.6 million total viewers, 2 million of whom were persons 25 to 54, USA’s target demographic.

The second-highest-rated cable movie of the week was “Beautiful Girl,” which delivered 3.078 million total viewers, 1.7 million of them people 18 to 49, ABC Fam’s demographic. “Beautiful Girl,” on Oct. 19, wound up ABC Fam’s highest-rated original movie of the year and helped the struggling network to increase its overall primetime numbers for the week by 22% over the same period a year ago.

Two hit cable series continued to please their fans: MTV’s reality half-hour “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica” chalked up 3 million total viewers, 2.3 million of them people 18-49, and FX’s “Nip/Tuck” delivered 2.9-million viewers, of which 2.1 million were people 18-49.
