Vampire telepic stakes Sutherland

Thesp joins Lowe, Cromwell, Mathis for King adaptation

Donald Sutherland has joined the cast of TNT’s mini “Salem’s Lot.”

Pic, based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, is about a journalist who returns to his New England hometown to find that it has been overrun with vampires.

Sutherland will play Richard Straker, a mysterious antique store owner and right-hand man to the head vampire.

Sutherland rounds out a cast that includes Rob Lowe, Andre Braugher, Rutger Hauer, James Cromwell and Samantha Mathis.

Thesp next appears in “The Italian Job” and “Cold Mountain.” Last year, he won a Golden Globe for his work in HBO’s “Path to War.”

“Salem’s Lot” began lensing this month in Australia.

Mikael Salomon is directing the telepic, written by Peter Filardi (“The Craft.”)

TNT and Warner Bros. TV are co-producing, with Mark Wolper and Jeff Hayes exec producing.
