Saturday night’s U.S. Air Guitar Championship brought would-be guitar gods out of the bedroom to the fabled Roxy on the Sunset Strip, where guys and gals in their best rocker ensembles strutted their stuff before judges including Audioslave’s Tom Morello and Veruca Salt’s Nina Gordon. Host Greg Behrendt outlined the simple rules for the competish at its outset: No real guitars allowed, but picks and air roadies were OK.
Twenty contestants vied for the regional title, with Cry Tuff selected to represent the West Coast. Cry Tuff then battled previously crowned East Coast champ David “C. Diddy” Jung for the national crown, but lost.
Jung, who heads to Finland for the Air Guitar World Championship, won the West Coast crowd over with his victory speech. “The U.S. will be represented this year and the U.S. is gonna win it!” he vowed.
HBO’s Project Greenlight exec producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipstiz filmed the competish, co-sponsored by Hollywood Records, for a documentary that will also chronicle the finals.
