Sony Pictures Television Intl. has sold a 35% equity stake in its action-adventure channel AXN Japan to Jupiter Programming, that country’s largest content provider.
Jupiter is a joint venture of Liberty Media Intl. and Sumitomo.
Subsequent to the investment, Jupiter’s affiliate sales team will assume responsibility for AXN Japan’s affiliate sales to the 400-odd cable operators in the country. No financial terms were available for the deal.
SPTI senior exec VP Andy Kaplan and Jupiter prexy Tetsuro Takeoka unveiled the deal Tuesday.
“Jupiter’s investment in AXN Japan demonstrates its commitment to building and selling the most compelling channel packages in the region. AXN Japan’s strength as a network is further enhanced by its addition to (Jupiter’s) lineup,” Kaplan said.
AXN Japan is already carried throughout the country on the SkyPerfecTV digital platform as well as on cable systems like J-Com Broadband.
International networks are a key strategy in SPTI’s long-range commitment to the global marketplace, with 30 channel feeds in more than 100 countries.
