Pubcaster licenses Discovery, negotiates with Sony
CANNES — RAI Cinema, the film arm of the Italo pubcaster, finalized package deals with U.S. majors Warner Bros. and Paramount that include “Cold Case” and “Without a Trace” from the former and “Jake 2.0” and “Navy NCIS” from the latter. CEO Giancarlo Leone said that future pacts will be one- to two-year deals covering specially selected product.
RAI Trade, the licensing arm of the Italian pubcaster, has inked to become the sole merchandising agent for the Discovery Channel in Italy.
Three-year deal covers product for the cabler’s core demo, 25- to 39-year-old males.
Discovery director of international licensing Jo Edwards said the company is “looking to capitalize on RAI’s experience with local manufacturers.”
And finally, RAI 1 is in negotiations with Sony Pictures Television Intl. and Palomar to co-produce “Gente di Mare” (Beach People), an hourlong drama series. Should the deal be completed, Columbia TriStar will be the distributor.
