Powell vows to stay with June 2 date

Letters ask commish to delay rule

WASHINGTON — FCC Commissioner Michael Powell is saying it again, and this time he means it.

Powell insists he will stick to a June 2 deadline for approving the new media-ownership rules and will not seek further public comment before the commission’s vote.

The statement came after a flurry of letters from Capitol Hill late last week calling on Powell to delay the rule making.

“If I were convinced that the record was deficient, or that any proposed course required additional comment, I would not hesitate to seek it,” he wrote in a letter to members of the Senate Commerce Committee.
